NEW LIB

New Challenges for Public Libraries aims to create a transnational community formed around public libraries active in the European countries involved, in order to share good practices and test the design thinking approach to develop innovative services and promote the active involvement of the citizens.

COMPLETED

SUBJECT

In many communities around the world, public libraries are still the only place where any person, regardless of education or skill level, can have access to information. And as vital as libraries are, many remain underutilized and stretched thin, with limited budgets and resources.

OBJECTIVES

While libraries have existed for centuries never has the time been so ripe for reflecting upon the future of libraries .The challenges facing librarians are real, complex, and varied. And given the rapidly evolving information landscape, they need new answers, which requires new perspectives, new tools, and new approaches.

WHAT WE DID

CILAB, together with the other project partners, helps teams of designers and librarians in developing new services for libraries in order to better attain EU patrons needs. The method is based on design thinking tools applied to libraries contexts. Workshops and mentoring are used as means to support learning of the methods, following the teams in every step of the process from inspiration, to ideation and iteration.

METHODOLOGY

Based on Innovation Toolkit for Global Libraries. The meaning of this toolkit is is to help libraries serve and connect with their patrons and their communities in more impactful ways. The project resulted in a replicable and scalable model of innovation that includes frameworks, tools, and strategies for creating and sustaining more flexible and responsive cultures within libraries and across the field of global librarianship

RESULTS

To share best practices and to exchange knowledge, creating a libraries network across Europe that promotes partecipatory design thinking process through collaboration with citizens. The goal is to elaborate innovative services and a new mind-set in the cultural sector

“Library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.”
