Footwear in the 21st century: New skills for the scientifically-led design of comfortable, sustainable and fashion-oriented footwear products.

CURRENT

SUBJECT

The European shoes factories are among the oldest in the world and pass on their knowledge from generation to generation, producing high-level footwear and making the shoe industry one of the most creative. The knowledge in the manufacture of the shoes is now part of the culture of the continent. Nowaday, the company are evolving thanks to new technologies. Because of these and new consumer demands, companies are increasingly focusing on wellness and sustainability, making them competitive advantages to meet demand.

WHAT WE DID

The ultimate goal of the SciLED alliance is to review the product life cycle to create and incorporate new knowledge into the footwear design cycle. This would create a scientific basis that would exponentially improve the sustainability and comfort of the products. The dissemination of this knowledge would create stronger and more specialized professional figures, making the career of future employees, such as footwear designers, more attractive, also with the purpose to replace the old guard, composed of more than 100,000 people.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

It is absolutely necessary to know the best software in the field in order to update the knowledge of the production and creative process of designing the shoe. For this reason we are working to survey and review applications, such as CAD, CAM or CAE, which are mainly used by companies in the sector. In order to do this, it is necessary to get in touch with those who lives this reality every day: the companies. Because of this, we are immersing ourselves in the sector by mixing the academic world with the corporate and also comparing ourselves on the main themes of the project, comfort and sustainability.

“I really believe in feedbacks and network: CREA was a great opportunity to know new people, new cultures and new subjects, out of my everyday context”

Rodolfo Cuadros, Peruvian digital professional Crea 2015 participant, Como Summer Academy, Italy
